Blackpink, also stylized as BLɅϽKPIИK, is an immensely popular South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment. The group consists of four talented members: Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. They made their debut in August 2016 with the release of their single album, Square One, which featured the hit songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah.” Both tracks achieved tremendous success, reaching number one on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and the US Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, respectively. Known as the “biggest girl group in the world,” Blackpink has gained unprecedented international recognition. They are the most successful Korean girl group on a global scale. In the United States, they hold the highest charting record for a female Korean act on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100, with their single “Ice Cream” peaking at number 13 in 2020. Additionally, their second studio album, Born Pink, topped the Billboard 200, making it the first album by a female act in South Korea to sell over two million copies and attain the status of best-selling album of all time. Blackpink achieved another milestone as the first girl group to reach number one on the Billboard Artist 100 and to enter and top the Billboard Emerging Artists chart. In 2018, they became the first female Korean act to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du.”

Blackpink’s collaboration with Dua Lipa on the song “Kiss and Make Up” earned them several notable accolades. It became the first track by a Korean group to be certified by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and received a platinum certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The group’s debut studio album, The Album, solidified their position as the best-selling Korean girl group, surpassing all previous records. It peaked at number two on the Billboard 200, a feat surpassed by their subsequent album, Born Pink. This later release not only topped the Billboard 200 but also set two Guinness World Records, making Blackpink the first Korean girl group to achieve these milestones. The album’s lead single, “Pink Venom,” became the first song by a Korean group to top the ARIA Singles Chart and the first song by a girl group to top the Billboard Global 200.

Blackpink has amassed a significant online presence and broken numerous records in the digital realm. Their music video for “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” was the first by a Korean group to surpass one billion views on YouTube and has since reached over two billion views. Blackpink’s music videos for “Kill This Love” and “How You Like That” set records for the most views within the first 24 hours of release, with the latter breaking three Guinness World Records. They hold the distinction of being the most-subscribed music artist and own the most-viewed music channel on YouTube. Moreover, Blackpink is the most-followed and most-streamed girl group on Spotify. The group’s accomplishments extend beyond the realm of music. They have received various prestigious awards, including the New Artist of the Year Award at the Golden Disc Awards and Seoul Music Awards, as well as the MAMA Award for Best Female Group in 2020 and 2022. Blackpink made history by winning the first MTV Video Music Award for a Korean girl group and earning the first Brit Award nomination for a Korean girl group. They were also recognized as the first female Korean group on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia and were named Time’s 2022 Entertainer of the Year.
